Chapter 12

Harper opened her eyes; it was still dark. There was something warm around her; much warmer than her own body and her blanket. The thing pressed against her at times. Her eyes focused and she found herself in Leonard’s arms, and it was his chest pressing against her.

Leonard was fast asleep. He must be tired after he… took her hard. She shivered at the thought. She’d enjoyed it so much. She had thought about that at times. Sex with him was always great and easy.

But he said she was still leaving first thing tomorrow, and he wouldn’t care whether they spent the night together or not.

It pained her to even think about that. Now that she was in his arms, she didn’t want to be anywhere else. Leonard had to feel something for her, right?

When he was asleep, there was a relaxed smile on his face. She wanted to stroke his cheek, but she might wake him. A smile found its way to her face, regardless.

But tomorrow, and every day after tomorrow, she wouldn’t wake up to his face. Actually, when she was back home, she would never see him again.

Why?

Maybe she was torturing herself. If she hadn’t gone to his room, they wouldn’t have had sex together. And maybe that would make the goodbyes easier.

If only... If only she had never cared about Iker. The man never cared about her, after all. If she had never gone with that vampire, she wouldn’t have gotten Leonard into trouble. And if that had been the case, Dakari wouldn’t have had an excuse to chase her back home. And... Dakari wouldn’t have had the chance to convince Leonard that she left without a care for him.

How could Harper not care about Leonard when he was the man who had saved her more than once? Once from Javier, once from the vampires ambushing them in Ricolas, once from the cathedral… There’d probably been more times that he had done it, and she didn’t remember.

“Hey.”

Harper blinked and found Leonard eyeing her with concern. It seemed he wasn’t mad at her anymore. She gasped and dropped her gaze.

“Sorry, did I wake you?”

His arms around her relaxed, so she took the time to wipe away her tears.

Leonard scowled. “Why are you crying? You were the one who came to my room. You knew what would happen.”

She nodded. “Yes, and I wanted it to happen. It’s just that... Never mind, you won’t want to know.”

He glared at her, hissing.

But he said he didn’t want to listen when they were having dinner together. Why was he asking now and seeming impatient?

“But you said you didn’t want to know.”

His gaze seemed to soften. “Well, you’ve spent the effort, and you made it clear that you aren’t here for the money.” He sighed and sat up. His figure in the dimness of the night looked larger than usual. He continued. “I guess if you want to say something, you can.”

“Can I hug you?”

He stared at her for another second. There was a mischievous glint in his eyes.
